The five Human Design types explained in plain words
Human Design has five types: Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor and Reflector. Your type describes how your energy works. Each type comes with a strategy, a simple rule for meeting opportunities, and a signature, a feeling that tells you things are going well. You can find your type from your date, time and place of birth.
What Human Design is
Human Design is a modern system. It was created by Alan Robert Krakower, who took the name Ra Uru Hu, after an experience he described on the Spanish island of Ibiza in 1987. It combines Western astrology, the 64 hexagrams of the Chinese I Ching and a set of energy centres similar to the chakras of Indian tradition.
Your chart, called the bodygraph, is calculated from two moments: your birth, and a design moment about three months earlier, when the Sun stood 88° earlier in the zodiac. The planets at both moments switch on gates. When both ends of a channel are switched on, the two centres it links become defined: steady and reliable in you. Centres that are not defined are open: receptive, and easily coloured by the people around you.
Your type follows from which of the nine centres are defined and how they connect. Two centres matter most:
- the Sacral, the centre of steady life force and work energy
- the Throat, the centre of speaking and acting
Human Design is not a science. Like astrology, it is a symbolic system, and many people use it as a tool for self-reflection and calmer decisions.
The five types at a glance
The signature is the feeling that tells you that you are living in line with your design. The not-self theme is the feeling that tells you that you are not. Both are signals, not judgements.
| Type | Approximate share | Strategy | Signature | Not-self theme |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Generator | about a third | To respond | Satisfaction | Frustration |
| Manifesting Generator | about a third | To respond, then inform | Satisfaction and peace | Frustration and anger |
| Projector | about 20–22% | To wait for the invitation | Success | Bitterness |
| Manifestor | about 8–9% | To inform before acting | Peace | Anger |
| Reflector | about 1% | To wait a lunar cycle | Surprise | Disappointment |
The shares are the figures commonly cited by Human Design teachers. Together, Generators and Manifesting Generators make up about 70% of people. These numbers come from the system itself, not from a scientific census, and sources differ by a few percentage points.
Generator
If you are a Generator, your Sacral centre is defined, and no motor centre is connected to your Throat. This gives you steady, renewable energy for work you enjoy. When you do what truly speaks to you, you can keep going for a long time and still have energy left at the end of the day.
Strategy: to respond. Instead of pushing to make things happen, notice what your body responds to: a request, an offer, an idea, something you see. The Sacral answers with a gut feeling or a sound, a short "uh-huh" or "un-un", before your mind joins in.
Signature and not-self. Satisfaction tells you that your energy is going to the right place. Frustration tells you that you are pushing, or that you said yes to something without a real response.
Try this. For one week, notice your first physical reaction to simple yes-or-no questions before you start to think.
Manifesting Generator
If you are a Manifesting Generator, your Sacral centre is defined, and a motor centre is connected to your Throat. Your energy is fast and many-sided. You can handle several things at once, and you often skip steps that other people need.
Strategy: to respond, then inform. Wait for the gut response, as Generators do. Then, before you act, tell the people your action affects. Informing is not asking for permission. It simply removes surprise and resistance.
Signature and not-self. Satisfaction and peace when things flow. Frustration and anger when you rush past your response, or when people you did not inform slow you down.
Try this. Let yourself drop what no longer gets a response from you. Changing direction is part of how you work.
Projector
If you are a Projector, your Sacral centre is open, and no motor centre is connected to your Throat. Your gift is seeing people and systems clearly, and guiding them. Your energy works best in focused periods rather than long, steady hours.
Strategy: to wait for the invitation. Your guidance works best when someone recognises you and asks for it. This matters most for the big things in life: work, love and where you live. Waiting is not doing nothing. You can study, prepare and make your skills visible while you wait.
Signature and not-self. Success when you are recognised and invited. Bitterness when you give advice nobody asked for, or try to work at a Generator's pace.
Try this. Keep a list of the moments when people ask for your view. Those topics show where you are already recognised.
Manifestor
If you are a Manifestor, a motor centre is connected to your Throat, and your Sacral centre is open. You are built to start things: to have an idea and set it in motion without waiting for anyone.
Strategy: to inform before acting. Tell the people your decision affects before you act. You do not need their permission. Informing makes your way easier, because others are not caught by surprise.
Signature and not-self. Peace when you can act freely and people know what is coming. Anger when you meet resistance, often because nobody was informed.
Try this. Before your next decision, send one short message to the people it affects. Then notice how smoothly things go.
Reflector
If you are a Reflector, none of your nine centres is defined. This is the rarest type. You take in and reflect the energy of the people and places around you, much as the Moon reflects the light of the Sun. Your surroundings matter more to you than to any other type.
Strategy: to wait a lunar cycle. For big decisions, give yourself about 28 days. As the Moon moves through all the gates, you see the question from many sides. Talking it through with people you trust helps.
Signature and not-self. Surprise when life keeps showing you something new. Disappointment when you are in the wrong place, or when you have rushed.
Try this. Notice how different places change your mood. Choosing where you spend your time is one of your most important decisions.
Authority: your inner signal for decisions
Your strategy tells you how to meet opportunities. Your authority tells you which inner signal to trust when you decide. It comes from your defined centres, so two people of the same type can have different authorities.
- Emotional authority (solar plexus). Your feelings move in a wave. Do not decide at the high point or the low point. Sleep on it and wait for calm clarity. If your solar plexus is defined, this is always your authority.
- Sacral authority. A gut response in the moment: a clear yes or no from the body.
- Splenic authority. A quiet, instant intuition that speaks once. Trust the first signal.
- Ego authority. What you truly want and are willing to commit to.
- Self-projected authority. Talk it through and listen to what you say. Your own voice shows you the answer.
- Environmental authority. Clarity comes from talking with trusted people, in a place that feels right.
- Lunar authority. For Reflectors: the full cycle of the Moon, about 28 days.
Your profile, in brief
Your profile is a pair of numbers, such as 1/3 or 5/1. It comes from the lines of the Sun at your birth and design moments. Each line has a theme: 1 Investigator, 2 Hermit, 3 Experimenter, 4 Networker, 5 Problem-solver and 6 Role model. A 1/3 profile, for example, learns by studying the basics first and then testing them in real life.
Why your birth time matters
The Moon moves quickly, so a few hours can change the gates it switches on and, with them, your centres, authority or even your type. Without a birth time, your type is often still clear, but your authority and profile may differ. Without a birth time, the free calculator shows your type only if it stays the same for the whole day.
What helps. Treat your type as an experiment, not a label. Follow your strategy for two weeks. Each evening, write one line: did I feel my signature or my not-self theme today? Your own notes will tell you more than any description.
