What a birth chart shows

A birth chart is a map of the sky for the exact minute and place you were born. It shows the zodiac sign of the Sun, the Moon and the eight planets, plus the rising sign, or Ascendant: the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon.

Astrologers read the Sun as your core, the Moon as your emotional needs and the rising sign as the way others first see you. The planets add detail: how you think (Mercury), love (Venus), act (Mars) and grow (Jupiter and Saturn).

What you need

Your date of birth is enough for the Sun and most planets. The Moon moves about 13° a day, so the Moon sign needs your birth time. The rising sign and the houses change every few minutes, so they need both the exact time and the place. The time is usually on your birth certificate or hospital record.

How accurate it is

Positions are calculated with an astronomical ephemeris for the tropical zodiac and checked against Swiss Ephemeris: the planets and the Ascendant are accurate to about one arcminute. Historical time zones are taken into account, including daylight saving time and the years when many countries used a different standard time.
